“The Role of Small Towns in Europe’s Sustainable Development” is the subject of UMa’s Education Research Centre (CIE-UMa)’s third Conference Cycle within the scope of the reserach line on Community Development.
The main lecturer will be Paulo Fernandes, Mayor of Fundão, and the moderator will be Liliana Rodrigues, Associate Professor at UMa’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Coordinator of this research line.
The event will be held at the Jesuits’ College Auditorium on June 13th at 14:30. Participation is open to the public but requires pre-registration by April 19th via the form available here.
This session aims to consolidate a reflection on national and local powers and a discussion on the possibility of transnational democratization. The discussion will cover: Europe’s challenge to consolidate its policies to the regional level; regional asymmetries; ways to benefit from the European financial programme for regional development (especially for regions that are not so developed in terms of sustainable and profitable infrastructures); employment and qualifications; adapting Education to the digital age; and shaping a European identity.
Understanding the role that smaller cities play in territorial development and cohesion, particularly with regard to issues of poverty, inclusion and social reintegration, will be crucial for the future of European regions.
