Conference: “Portuguese Revolution and Education”

In the year that marks the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s 25th of April, UMa’s Education Research Centre (CIE-UMa) will host the conference “Portuguese Revolution and Education”, to be presented by António Teodoro, Professor at the Lusófona University of Humanities and Technologies and Director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Centre for Education and Development (CeiED).

The event will take place at the Jesuits’ College Auditorium on April 22nd starting at 14:30, and will the moderated by Nuno Fraga, Assistant Professor at UMa’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Participation is open to the public but requires pre-registration by April 19th via the form available here.

Lecturer’s biography

António Teodoro is a prominent figure in the field of Education and a founding member of Portugal’s Teachers’ Union movement. He was Lisbon’s Teachers’ Union President from 1979 to 1989 and served as Secretary General of the National Teachers’ Federation (FENPROF) from 1983 to 1994. Teodoro also played a key role in the democratization of Education, namely as Chief Inspector for Primary Education (1974-75), member of the National Council for Education (1988-94), and consultant to the Ministers’ Council for Education, Training, Culture and Science (1995-99).

His influence extended beyond the national context as a member of the European Committee of the World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession (CMOPE/WCOTP) from 1988 to 1992, member of the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE) from 1993 to 1994, and Vice-President of the Research Committee for Sociology of Education (RC04) from 2006 to 2014.

Since 2007 Professor António has been the Coordinator of the Ibero-American Education Policy Research Network, founder of the Comparative Education section of the Portuguese Society for Comparative Education (SEC-SPCE), Director of the Lusófona Journal for Education, and member of the Editorial Board of dozens of journals in Portugal, Brazil, France and the USA. Finally, he is also the author of a vast body of scientific publications and presentations in the field of Education, published in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.
