In the centenary of Paulo Freire’s birth (1921-2021), CIE-UMa aims to revive the legacy left by this educator, pedagogue and philosopher, revisiting his methodology marked by dialogue between teacher and student, focused on the students’ active and critical role. A fierce critic of the idea that the teacher had all the knowledge and the student was just a storehouse of notions and beliefs, Freire advocated an education that led to freedom and understanding of the world in order to shape it.
In the midst of the 21st century, in which we are living through crucial moments for education in Portugal and around the world, we aim to tackle the following questions: What skills are needed to exercise proactive citizenship? How do we make critical and conscientious decisions in non-linear situations of great complexity, uncertainty and unease? How to lead and how to welcome leadership? How to use Technology and Science to make decisions and overcome the obstacles of the present?
The colloquium programme includes, in addition to thematic workshops, four plenary lectures featuring Carlos Alberto Torres from the University of California and the Paulo Freire Institute in São Paulo, Afonso Scocuglia from the Federal University of Paraíba, Maria José Camacho from the UMa’s Faculty of Social Sciences, and Sónia Martins from UMa’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.
